Digital Single Market

The Digital Single Market (DSM) is a wide-ranging group of legislative initiatives aimed at creating a pan-EU framework of laws for the EU digital economy. Over the course of 2018 and into 2019, we will see new EU legislation being widely implemented as part of the EU Commission's DSM Strategy.

The changes will be far reaching and game changing. The key areas to be affected will be:

  • copyright reform (including increased liability for certain online service providers)
  • amendments to the Audio-Visual Media Services Directive affecting VOD services and video sharing platforms
  • increased regulation of platforms and search engines
  • VAT regulation for online trade
  • harmonization of rules on conformity of goods and digital content sold online
  • reforms to the EU telecoms regulatory framework (including a new EU Electronics Communications Code)

These changes are likely to affect any business with an online presence in Europe.
