Mariel Hoare is a Senior Associate (Australian Qualified) in the International Arbitration team in London, focussing on construction and engineering disputes.

Mariel advises and represents construction industry clients on dispute avoidance and dispute resolution in all phases of a project, from advising on appropriate dispute resolution forums and mechanisms, providing contractual advice, and assisting with contract administration, to acting for clients in all forms of alternative dispute resolution, including adjudication, dispute boards, expert determination, as well as litigation and arbitration.  

Mariel has significant experience advising clients and instructing technical experts in relation to complex claims for delay, variations, and defective building work. Her experience includes major public infrastructure and transport, commercial development, industrial, and conventional and renewable energy projects across Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Australia. She has advised on many of the standard form contracts used in the construction industry.

In addition to her construction and engineering disputes practice, Mariel also has significant experience advising and acting for public authorities and bidders in public procurement challenges in the Technology & Construction Court. Her recent experience includes acting for the Gambling Commission in a challenge brought by The New Lottery Company to the award of the Fourth National Lottery Licence. This case was listed in The Lawyer’s ‘Top 20 Cases of 2025’.

Representative experience

Acting for a chemical company in an ICC arbitration (seated in London) concerning the construction of a polyethylene train at the world’s largest petrochemical plant in Saudi Arabia.

Acting for a contractor in an ICC arbitration (seated in London) concerning the engineering, procurement, and construction of wind turbines at a wind farm in Jordan.  

Acting for a contractor in adjudications and public procurement litigation concerning a contract for the design, build, and operation of an energy-from-waste facility in Scotland.

Acting for an international specialist façade contractor in adjudications concerning the design and construction of façade systems for a mixed-use development in London.

Advising a broadcaster and telecommunications company in relation to defects arising from the development of film studios in England.

Acting for an alternative network provider in litigation brought by a public authority under a state subsidy contract.

Acting for a public authority in public procurement litigation brought by unsuccessful bidders in relation to a billion-pound public contract.
