Constitutional reform to reduce the weekly work shift is published

Today, March 3, 2026, the reform to the Political Constitution of the United Mexican States to reduce the work shift is published in the Federal Official Gazette.

The main points of the reform:

  • The Political Constitution of the United Mexican States establish a 40-hour working week.
  • The reduction in the working week shall not entail a reduction in wages or social security benefits for workers.
  • The overtime limit is extended from 9 to 12 hours per week, which may be distributed over a maximum of 4 hours per day, up to 4 days per week. Such overtime must be paid with a double rate.
  • The reform prohibits minors from working overtime.
  • The reform will be implemented gradually, with a reduction in working hours of two hours per year on January 1 of each year. Consequently, the reduction will be carried out as follows:
